Steelworkers award scholarships

Two union daughters have been chosen to receive scholarships from United Steelworkers for attendance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

• Ava Elmore was selected as recipient of the 2024 USW District 7, Sub 2 Scholarship. She is the daughter of USW Local 1899 member Darrell “Fish” Elmore.

• Ava Spalding was selected as recipient of the 2024 USW Local 1899 Scholarship. She is the daughter of USW Local 1899 member Darin Spalding.

Applicants were selected and ranked by a panel of SIUE professors. The committee members ranked applicants as to GPA, SAT scores, ACT scores, extracurricular activities, honors and the opportunity to comment on any other outstanding aspect of the application. The applicants also wrote an essay, the quality of which was judged as part of the committee’s decision.

Local President Dan Simmons gave his best wishes on future endeavors to both winners and to all who applied for the 2024 United Steelworkers scholarships.
