United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655 is hosting its sixth annual skate night this Saturday, Sept. 9, to benefit Faces of Our Children to help find a cure and provide support for those suffering from sickle cell anemia.

In the past five years of hosting the skate night, Local 655 has raised $27,968 for sickle cell research.

This year’s skate night will run from 7-10 p.m. at Skate King, 2700 Kienlen Ave., St. Lous, Mo. 63121. The evening’s fun will include raffles, a 50/50 drawing and more. Refreshments will be provided.

RAISING AWARENESS
UFCW International has raised millions of dollars to support Faces of Our Children’s (FOOC’s) efforts to deliver educational programs and materials through the internet, traditional media, schools, and community-based organizations. FOOC also works to advance public policy and increase government and corporate funding with the goal of bettering the lives of people who suffer from this deadly disease, and ultimately finding a cure.

“There is nothing easy about living with sickle cell anemia,” said Local 655 President David Cook. “If you asked someone living with this disease, they’d likely describe the blood flow restriction caused by the sickling of blood cells as ‘glass circulating through my blood stream’ or ‘a fracturing of my bones.’”

The pain can go on for hours, days or longer.

“Imagine consoling a child living through this trauma year after year,” Cook said.

DONATE
Checks can be made payable to The UFCW Fund, with Sickle Cell Fundraiser in the memo line.
