O’Fallon, MO – Union bar and grill The Irish Gypsy, a signatory contractor of UNITE HERE Local 74, is hosting an inaugural Suicide Awareness Golf Tournament Oct. 14 with proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Denny Corrigan, a member of Insulators Local 1 who co-owns the bar with his wife Amy, said the tournament is a first in their efforts to support AFSP and raise awareness about suicide and its prevention.

“We had a cook that worked for us that took his own life,” Corrigan said. “He already had a sandwich named after him, the Patrick Sandwich. Now with every sandwich sold we donate a dollar for suicide prevention.”

AFSP is a voluntary health organization based in New York with local programs, chapters and events in all 50 states. AFSP’s chapters provide suicide prevention education, community programs, research and advocacy, as well as support for those affected by suicide.

“People need to be made aware there’s plenty of outlets out there where people can get some help and not have that feeling of helpless,” Corrigan said. “We already have a lot of people who have sponsored in memoriam.”

The tournament will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14, and will begin with a noon shotgun start at The Falls Golf Club in O’Fallon, Mo. The entry fee of $125 per person or, $500 per four-person team, includes lunch, dinner and beverages with prizes for three flights, Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive and Longest Putt.
