Wright City, MO – About 90 students in need in the Wright City School District will continue to be served through the district’s Operation Backpack program this year thanks to the Warren County Labor Club and Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562.

On Oct. 6, members of the labor club and Local 562 dropped off five truckloads of food at the school, and Local 562 made a cash donation toward the program, which helps fill the gap by providing backpacks of nutritious, non-perishable meals to be eaten by students over the weekend when resources may be limited.

Club President Rod Herrmann, a member of Gas Workers Local 11-6, said the club started working with the district on the program last year. School officials say October is one of the months the program is in the most need.

EMPTY SHELVES
“When we got there, their shelves were empty except for a couple boxes of cereal,” Herrmann said. “Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562 really came through for us. We filled the shelves and then some. We’re hoping that between the food and the financial donation, their pantry will last the district through the end of the school year.”

Much of the canned and boxed food was donated by Local 562. Dan Mueller, a member of the union and the labor club, asked Local 562 to participate and the union helped out in a big way in just a short amount of time.

‘JAW DROPPING’
“Local 562 members, contractors and our community are amazing everyday but when someone needs help it is truly incredible how quickly everyone comes together, said Local 562 Business Manager John O’Mara. “A special shoutout goes to our members for getting at least four of those trucks filled in just a short week and a half. It was truly jaw dropping.”

The Warren County Labor Club began assisting the Wright City School District last year by dropping off a truckload of food and making a donation to the program, which serves students kindergarten through twelfth grade. It plans to make another financial donation in November.
