Worker killed at Granite City Steel

Granite City – Timothy Dagon, 42, a member Of United Steelworkers Local 1899, was pronounced dead at St. Louis University Hospital at 12:31 p.m. on Sunday, March 5 after an incident in the rail yard at Granite City Steel at 10 a.m. that day.

Police said it appeared to be an accident. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration Area Director Aaron Priddy said the office had sent an investigator to the plant, but no further information was available.

U.S. Steel spokeswoman Erin DiPietro said the family was notified and the company is providing services to the family through its employee assistance program. The company is also investigating the incident, she said.

“We will work closely with the United Steelworkers and relevant government agencies throughout the process,” DiPietro said. “Our deepest sympathies are with the employee’s family and his coworkers.”
