Workers Memorial Day programs April 28 and May 1

Area union members will observe Workers Memorial Day programs with events April 28 and May 1 honoring workers who died on the job, or from work-related illness or injury.

MADISON COUNTY
The Greater Madison County Federation of Labor will hold its annual Workers Memorial Day observance on Thursday, April 28, at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

The event will begin at 7 p.m.

The park is located on Alton’s north and east side along College Avenue, also called Illinois 111 or Illinois 140 at that point.

ST. LOUIS
The Greater St. Louis Labor Council will host the 42nd Annual Robert O. Kortkamp Union Prayer Service and Mass honoring deceased union workers on Sunday, May 1, at the Shrine of St. Joseph, at 11th and Biddle streets in downtown St. Louis.

The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. with an interfaith Workers’ Memorial Prayer Service outside the church to recognize union members who have died on the job or from work-related injury or illness. Clergy of several faiths will participate in the prayer service. Mass will follow at 9 a.m. inside the church.

Following Mass, the Labor Council will host brunch at Maggie O’Brien’s, 2000 Market St. in downtown St. Louis. Tickets for the brunch are $30 per person or $300 for a table of 10. Checks should be made payable to Union Labor Mass, and mailed to the St. Louis Labor Council, AFL-CIO, 3301 Hollenberg Drive Bridgeton, MO 63044 no later than Tuesday, April 26, to reserve your place.

All proceeds from the brunch will be donated to the Shrine of St. Joseph to aid in restoration efforts.
