Alton, IL – As has become tradition, the Greater Madison County Federation of Labor kicked off Labor Day activities Aug. 25, a week before other area parades, to open the region’s Labor Day festivities.

Smiles and waves were the order of the day as union members, their children and plenty of local Labor supporters – including all of the Madison County Democratic candidates in the November election – stepped off under sunny skies, and with strong community support, for the annual Alton/Wood River Union Family Parade.

The parade is held just before Labor Day to kick off the Metro East season of celebration, along with the James Stanley Memorial Charity Softball Tournament, which ended on the same day.

The annual Union Family Picnic at Gordon Moore Community Park had live music and children’s games and the concluding rounds of the softball tournament. Hundreds of union members from all the trades turned out to show the skills, strength and solidarity of Organized Labor in the River Bend region.
